Walter Edward Mewborn was born on January 29, 1931 in Pitt County, North Carolina. He was raised in a loving family consisting of ten siblings. He was the son of (the late) Andrew Mewborn and Willie Mae Galloway Mewborn. As a young boy, Eddie, as he was called, received his education in the Craven County school system.
After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon being honorably discharged from the military, he migrated to Brooklyn, New York where he met his future wife, Dolores Kithcart. After settling down, he became employed by General Motors in Linden, New Jersey. He eventually retired from GM after thirty years of service.
His love for cars inspired him to open his own Auto Mechanic shop in Bedford-Stuyvesant with two of his close friends. Although the business was successful, Eddie decided to tackle something different. This led him towards the funeral business where he worked for The House of Hills, Frank R. Bell, and Lawrence H. Woodward, to name a few.
Eddie became a member of Bridge Street A.M.E. Church where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a member of the Usher Board and Junior Steward Board. He was a man of many talents, but telling you off was his strongest . . . although he did have a nurturing spirit that was felt by family and friends.
Eddie will be remembered and cherished as a hardworking and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
On Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at the age of ninety-three, Walter Edward Mewborn departed this life in Brooklyn, New York. He was predeceased by his loving wife Dolores Mewborn (“Bunny”), but leaves to cherish his memory, his children: Dennis Harris (Springhill, Florida), Gregory Mewborn (Brooklyn) and Zandra Mewborn (Brooklyn); a sister Mary Louise Smith; daughter-in-law Yvonne Harris (Springhill, Florida); grandsons: Terrell Mewborn and David Harris; granddaughter Tyra Mewborn; one great-granddaughter Dyshawna, and a special “grandson” Coby; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
