Sylvia Darlene Wamer, daughter of (the late) Ruth Elmore and Benjamin Wamer, was born on October 26, 1957 in St. George, South Carolina. Sylvia entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 29, 2024 at her home in Brooklyn, New York.  Sylvia was raised by her mother, Ruth, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.  She was the eldest sister to two brothers, Benjamin and Ronald, and her sister, Sharon, who preceded her in death.

Sylvia proved to be a lifelong scholar, matriculating through the New York City public school system and graduating from the High School of Fashion Industries.  After high school, she attended Brooklyn College, ultimately earning a Master’s degree in Education from City College.  After graduating, she began her career as an educator in Brooklyn, focusing primarily on teaching students with special needs.  She retired from the New York City public school system, and decided to continue her studies at Capella University, focusing on Individual and Group Therapy.

Sylvia met and married (the late) Archie Lewis Moore, and together they had two children, Archie “Lamont” Moore and (the late) Sequoia Dhaniqua Moore. She is also the grandmother of Marcell Howard (son of Lamont Moore & Samantha Howard-Ravenell).

Sylvia was a person who lit up the room with her quick wit and frank remarks that often left the room full of laughter.  She was someone who kept the family connected, often sharing stories of their family history shared by her mother, aunts, uncles, and cousins — who remained connected from South Carolina to New York and everywhere in between.  As she retired from the Department of Education, she was a dependable resource, providing support to the family, especially her nieces and nephews, whenever called upon. Sylvia also gave back to the community, volunteering during election times as a poll worker.

Sylvia leaves behind a host of family to cherish those shared memories including her son, Lamont, and her grandson Marcell; her brothers: Benjamin Wamer, Jr. (Victoria) of St. George, South Carolina and Ronald Wamer (Shawn) of Dacula, Georgia; her aunt Barbara White of St. George; her lifelong sister/friend Bernadette Michelle Artist; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews including Keisha Wamer, Temidayo Cherish Ojo, Kalia Wamer, Kelvin Dove, Erica Smith, Justice Smith, Davina Roberts, Damien Roberts, Drew Wamer, Selina Wamer, Conwell “Aiden” Wamer, Alex (Dmitriy) Shulgin, Tremel Footman, Rayden Shulgin, Cameron Shulgin, Alexander Shulgin, Raven (Ryan) Braxton, Nevaeh Braxton, Sanaa Braxton, Diamone Wamer, Ravon Wamer, Michael Wamer, Victoria “Shian” (Trussie) Wamer-Jamerson, Caleb Jamerson, Ronald I. Wamer, Sharonda (Lee) Young, Elle Young, and Jordyn Young.
