Sheldon John Barrett Obituary

Sheldon John Barrett was born June 20, 1952 in Brooklyn, New York to (the late) Robert Mitchel Barrett and Helen Brown Norton.  He had three brothers and two sisters.

Growing up in Brooklyn, Sheldon attended St. Gregory the Great Catholic School and Boys High School.  He subsequently went to Howard University in Washington, D.C., then transferred to NYC’s St. John’s University.

After college, Sheldon went to work for the well-known Hotel Pennsylvania in Manhattan where he was a Front Office Manager.  It was during that time when he rekindled a teenage romance he shared with Alithia Pinder.  They were married on June 23, 1984.  From their union, two sons were born, Brandon Mandela Lee Barrett and Bryce Storm Norel Barrett.

In 1985, Sheldon left Hotel Pennsylvania and joined the New York City Department of Sanitation where he became a supervisor in the Operations Assistance Unit until retiring in 2012.

Sheldon enjoyed many things in life.  He relished traveling and history and music.  He loved parties, concerts and gatherings with family and friends, as well as watching sports, particularly baseball.  In fact, years ago, he played in a community baseball league.

Sheldon had a lively sense of humor.  He was extremely intelligent and knowledgeable.  He shared forty years with his soul mate by his side, and raised two sons with patience, guidance and love.  In his recent years, Sheldon mostly treasured interacting with his grandson Brandon, a.k.a. “Lil B”.  He always looked forward to their time together playing with superheroes and watching cartoons.

Sheldon’s spirit and loving memory abides in the hearts and minds of his wife Alithia Barrett; his sons: Brandon and Bryce Barrett, his grandson Brandon Obey-Barrett; two brothers: Stanley Brown and Gregory Barrett; two sisters: Andrea Barrett and Ashia Norton; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other relatives and very dear friends.

The impact Sheldon had on our lives and in our hearts is everlasting!
