Shaquan Stevenson Nelson, a.k.a. “Teddy” or “Quanny”, was born on February 26, 1994 at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania, the handsome son of Valerie Stuart-Faustin and (the late) Jackie Stevenson Nelson. He was the only child of Jackie, but the first of three other children of Valerie among: Dajuan, Ezekiah and Graciela McCall. Shaquan passed at Jamaica Hospital on Sunday morning, August 15, 2021.
Shaquan and his father Jackie, both rested their souls at the age of 27. Six months later, Valerie met Walter McCall (“Plucky”) who took Shaquan in as his first-born son. Jean Faustin became his stepfather from 2009 to present, even though he and Valerie wed in 2017.
Fayanna Phanor, came into his life in 2013, and they loved each other dearly. All that loving and doting created their Haitian, Panamanian, American princess named Araya Phanor-Nelson on April 25, 2014. Shaquan was hard working and a dedicated father who adored his princess. Even Fayanna’s closest friends have expressed that.
Quanny graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in 2011. He was very athletic, playing football in middle school, and basketball in high school. He loved to ball, and was considered “the Goat, Bron-Bron” because he reminded them of his favorite player Lebron James.
Shaquan Nelson was a very hard-working young man who was employed with CBS (Cleaning Building Services LLC) in Manhattan. According to his manager, Quan always kept a smile on his face, and if asked to do something, he would always reply “I gotchu”.
He lived his life to the fullest, affecting everyone he touched with his spirit, smile and laughter, bringing joy and laughter to anyone who crossed his path. Nigel Edwards, his manager and friend, shared that there was never a dull moment with Shaquan; he was always on some type of adventure. He was a brother to everyone he touched.
Shaquan was a person who danced to everything, and had the voice of an angel when he sang. He was loving, supportive and caring, but most of all … passionate. He decided to entrust all of his characteristics to his best friends, his cousin, brother and sister. Many of us hold a number of his traits so that when we gather, his presence will forever be there.
According to Araya’s godmothers, “Shaquan was a great father to Araya. He always treated her like a princess. He always made sure she knew he loved her and will always love her. We will continue to make sure our goddaughter is surrounded by love, and ensure that her crown never tilts. We will make sure that she remembers how kind and caring her father was, and how much he supported her through every adventure.”
He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, two step-fathers, daughter, one sister and two brothers, his grandparents: Irma and Louis Casimir, and Pastor Eneida Stuart; a grandaunt and granduncle: Micheline and Miguel Pierre; aunts and uncles: Dieula Nelson, Diane and Jasmine Casimir, Kisha Stuart and Lucy Deneus; twenty-five cousins, his daughter’s mother Fayanna; eight step-siblings, and five Blood Brothers from another mother, and a host of friends who’ll be missing Shaquan.
