Sadie Ada Brown

Mrs. Sadie Ada Goodwine Brown, age 93, of the Bronx, passed away Thursday afternoon in her sleep, May 27th, 2021, at her residence.

She was born December 19, 1927 in Beaufort County on Polowana Island, a daughter of the late Moses Goodwine Jr. and Laura Chaplin Goodwine.

Sadie was proceeded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, Solomon Brown Jr. and her eldest son Robert Brown. She is survived by her son Allen Brown, two grandchildren Trevor Brown and Techu Brown, six great grandchildren Techu Brown Jr., Isis Brown, Osiris Brown, Dontaye Brown, Marie Brown & Shenique Brown, her sister Mary G. Johnson, sister-in-law Janie Cooley and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

She was trained at Harlem Hospital and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She retired in 1993 after working for decades at Jacobi Hospital.

Sadie joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in 1947 and was a Deaconess and mother of the church. She taught Sunday School for forty-two years. Sadie was an accomplished painter, philatelist, sewing her own clothes and arts and crafts.

As a little girl Sadie wanted to travel. As an adult she fulfilled these dreams traveling to Malawi, Central Africa, Johannesburg, Swaziland, South Africa.

Sadie attended National Baptist Congress and conventions all over the United States and also the Baptist World Alliance when it was held in Canada.

Sadie was very active with home mission and has been chairperson of foreign mission committee for the Empire State Women’s Auxiliary for five years. She was also appointed second Vice President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Empire State Convention.

Funeral services in New York will be held at 9:30am Friday, June 18, 2021, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Harlem, with Reverend Butler officiating. 

Grave side services will be on June 22, 2021 at noon at the Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.
