Ruby Lorna Sinckler

Ruby Claire Lorna Hall was born to Claire Elbertha Barrow of Barbados and Henry London Hall of Guyana on August 13, 1921 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She was the first of seven children.  After the birth of her sister Hortense, the family migrated to the United States, eventually settling in Brooklyn.  In time, the family was blessed with five additional children.  The close-knit family managed through difficult times, covered by God’s grace and their mother’s unrelenting faith in her Lord.

Despite the challenge of tending to her siblings, Ruby excelled in school, graduating with honors from Girls High School in Brooklyn, and subsequently attending the renowned Harlem School of Nursing.  She was a proud graduate of the Class of 1945, and was certified as a Registered Nurse (RN).  A tireless work ethic, commitment to excellence, and compassion for the sick and afflicted eventually earned her the title of Head Nurse of the Operating Room (OR).  Ruby worked in the wards, emergency rooms and operating rooms of renowned institutions such as Harlem, Bellevue, Swedish, and Jewish Hospitals to name a few.

In 1946, Ruby was introduced to the love of her life, Ralph O'Brien Sinckler.  They dated and were married October 2, 1948.  Their union produced three children: Paul, Dyrnest and Jeffrey.  Ruby was a loving mother with a doctorate in parenting, not only her children by birth, but also relatives and close friends.  She was proficient in the art of providing for her children without spoiling them, creating a rich and loving home without the abundance of earthly riches and providing discipline without breaking the spirit.  Mom kept her boys in check while giving them the room to grow.  She taught them to respect others while maintaining their self-esteem, and that the mantle of leadership is made manifest by one’s willingness to serve others.  Later in life, Ruby would share the same love and commitment with her sons’ spouses, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. 

In the mid-sixties, Ruby shifted her focus to children’s daycare services where she worked to improve the health of children in their formative years, and engaged with parents and families in marginalized circumstances.  Working at Morningside Heights Daycare in Manhattan, or Park Avenue Daycare in Farragut Houses in Brooklyn, along with other locations, satisfied her sense of purpose and offered professional fulfillment.

Ruby maintained a steadfast faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ her entire life, remaining a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church to this day.  She literally lived the gospel, as witnessed by her deeds and interaction with all who came in contact with her.  Ruby was a comforter, mentor, and the ultimate support system for the world.  We thank God for a lifetime of love and joy.

Ruby is preceded in death by her husband Ralph O. Sinckler; her sisters: Delores and Hortense; and her brothers: Cyril, Harvey and Arthur.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Paul, Dyrnest and Jeffrey; her daughters-in-law: Carline, Charlene and Robin; eight grandchildren: Anton, Nicholas, Dominique, April, Nathaniel, Wesley, Jasmine and Christopher; three great-grandchildren: Alexandra, Anastasia and Nicholas; her brother Ken; her nieces: Norma Sinckler, Cherylin Christian, Rebecca Challenger, Leslie Hall Garrett, Jocelyn Hall, Roberta Holder-Mosley and Lynette Holder; her nephews: Gladstone Sinckler, Kenneth Sinckler, Darryl Branch and Stuart Hall; great-nieces: Cheryl Sinckler, Laura Sinckler, Lisa Sinckler, Serena Sinckler, Kathy Sinckler, Anita Christian, Jamie Branch and Alison Branch; great-nephews: Robert Sinckler, Michael Sinckler and Geoffrey Sinckler; and scores of loving relatives, church members and friends.
