Rotha Hunt Obituary

Rotha Hunt (Rotha Mae Bellemy) was born on July 6, 1950 in Bucksport SC.  She was the 3rd of the 7 children to Zelline Sherman & James Bellemy (both who proceeded her in death). Rotha would go on to be blessed with 4 additional siblings through the years. She grew up in a loving environment with a wealth of extended family and was educated in the South Carolina public school system. At the age of 18, after graduating HS and having her first son (Eric Hunt who proceeded her in death) Rotha migrated to Brooklyn NY. The goal was to create a better life for her family. She lived with Aunt Lillie and Uncle Norman Philips in Brownville, Brooklyn.

Rotha Mae was hired at Manufacturers Hanover Trust.  While working, so she put herself through cosmetology school and began her second career as a beautician. As Rotha created a path for herself in NY, she never forgot where she came from nor her family back home. Each week she sent money to her mother, for years, to help with the raring of her siblings. It was important to Rotha that her family shared in her accomplishments and successes. 

Rotha married her high school sweetheart, Burnette Hunt (who proceeded her in death) in the early 70’s and from this union she was blessed with another son, Shawn Antonio Hunt. Rotha raised her family in the Coney Island Houses. After separating from her husband, Rotha Mae purchased her home Brooklyn in which she residing for 30 years.  She took pride in homeownership and being President of the CO-OP organization.   She continued to work in the banking field as she grew her salon cliental. She was a hair revitalization specialist who focused on re-growing damaged hair and protective styles.  She worked at a popular location in Fort Green Brooklyn and eventually independently out of her home. For a short time Rotha worked as a stylist for Frank R. Bell Funeral Home.

Rotha joined St. Paul’s Community Baptist Church in 1981 and became an active member.  She was a member of Jewel Ministry, Andrew Guild, Healing Ministry, Women’s Ministry and traveled with her church family.  Rotha also worked for Precise Management as a Bookkeeper over the years.  She enjoyed this role because she had the opportunity to work for and with her friend Cheryl Ighodaro, who she traveled with extensively. Rotha returned to school and received a Certificate in Bookkeeping from Brooklyn College. 

Rotha had a smile like no other and would light up every room she entered. She was a hugger, affectionate, compassionate and welcoming. She was also a wonderful cook and was well known for her layered cakes and her holiday celebrations. Rotha also enjoyed exploring new places traveling and cruising with family and friends. Rotha Mae was a hard worker and loved her family from the depths of her being. On Wednesday April 24th 2019, at her home with her with her family and close friend by her side, Rotha Mae was called home. 

Proceeding her in death was her mother, father, husband, eldest son Eric, brothers Kenneth Bellamy & John Wallace and sister Zella Mae Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory her youngest son Shawn Hunt, daughter-in-law Tasha Hunt and 4 grandchildren Andrea, Eric Jr., Bria and Victoria Mae. Seven siblings: Yertha Gaddy, Marcella Sherman, Joyce Bellamy, Elzie Bellamy, Rose Sarvis, Sandra Bellamy & Derrick Wallace. Four Aunts Ida Bell Hunter, Sarah Sherman, Lillie Phillips, and Caletta Hunt (all of Bucksdport SC). There is also a wealth of extended family (nieces, nephews, cousins) and friends who loved her and will miss her dearly  Your toiling days are over; you have now gone to be in a better place to be with your God, We loved you, but God loves you best!

IN GRATEFUL APPRECIATION

I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to all the family and friends who cared for my mother in her time of need. You shared in my grieve as the Lord called her home.  Thank you to Diana Loftin, Aunt Nannette Nelson, Aunt Nel Jones, Charlene Freeman, Alice Bulter, Diane Smith, Aunt Joyce, Aunt Marcelle, Aunt Rose, Rev. Dr. Johnny Ray Youngblood and Bishop Dr. Victor Brown. You comforted her, loved her, feed her and consoled us all. Your strength and love for my mother cannot be measured and I am internally grateful. To the Maxwells and the Sprotts; I could not have made it without your guidance, support and friendship.   It is through God’s grace and your commission that I and the family have found comfort.
