Phyllis Roslyn Beggs Charter was born in Sans Souci, St. Georges, Grenada on February 26, 1931 to George Beggs and Sylvia DePradine Beggs. Despite the loss of her parents at an early age, Phyllis lived well and thrived throughout her life. She excelled academically and socially, eventually becoming a beloved teacher in Grenada.
On May 22, 1956, Phyllis married Joseph Anthony Charter and the couple raised four beautiful children together. Always wanting better for her family, in 1967 the Charters moved from St. Georges to Brooklyn, New York where they stayed for fifty-three years. In New York, Phyllis continued her successful life becoming equally loved by co-workers in her new banking career as she was by her students in Grenada. After retiring in 1997, Phyllis and Joseph spent many years traveling across the U.S. and to different parts of the world.
Phyllis Charter was a jovial, generous and selfless mother, grandmother and friend to many. She always did her best to help family and friends, leaving a lasting impression on the lives she touched. Some of the most cherished memories she created were the Sundays she spent cooking for her family and sharing her contagious, tremendous laughter. Phyllis shined her entire life even as she dealt with illness. She will always be remembered, admired and deeply missed by her loving family and friends.
Phyllis Roslyn Beggs Charter is survived by her husband Joseph; her children: Michael (Zelda), Jacqueline, Jillian and Simone (Kendall); her brother Justin; and her grandchildren: James, Dalia, Jasmine and Nathaniel. Her memory lives on, especially through her family and countless other close relatives and friends.
