Patricia Ann Cofield (Hairston/Hungria) was born on Monday, September 12, 1949 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Brooklyn, New York to Mary Ellen Floyd Cofield and Willis Allen Cofield. Pat was raised in the Kingsboro Projects in Brooklyn, and attended Holy Rosary Elementary School and then Prospect Heights High School from which she graduated in 1967.
During Pat’s career, she worked at various corporations, eventually retiring from her position as an Internship Coordinator and Executive Administrative Assistant at Cornell University. She loved to mentor her students, helping them to navigate life and careers in the big City.
Pat was a social butterfly who was fun-loving and enjoyed life to the fullest. She began traveling at an early stage in her life and continued to travel extensively. In her travels, she met a host of different people, all of whom she considered friends and with whom she remained in contact. She never met a stranger, as she would talk to anyone and everyone. Pat was greatly admired for her warm smile and infectious laugh. She enjoyed an active social life, always being the last one to leave the dance floor at a party, stating “It ain’t over till it’s over!”
Pat was beautiful, caring, protective, compassionate, fearless, honest, intelligent, outgoing, selfless, outspoken, and trustworthy. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, as well as a loyal friend. She loved to give advice, and was always trying to find ways to bring people together. Pat married the love of her life, Alfonso Hungria, in 2002 after a long and healthy partnership. Pat was a free spirit and always did things her way.
Pat was a wonderful, involved, and active mother to her only daughter, Kimberly, eventually becoming a doting grandmother with the birth of her only granddaughter, Kendall, in 2008. Pat always planned the best children’s activities, covering every pool, park, museum, street fair, and children’s concert throughout New York City. She became an integral part of her granddaughter’s elementary school years, volunteering at the school and becoming an indispensable part of the P.S. 124 team until her cancer diagnosis and Kendall’s subsequent graduation.
Pat lost her battle with ovarian cancer on Wednesday, February 10th, 2021 after putting up a valiant fight. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Alfonso Hungria; her daughter Kimberly Hairston; her granddaughter Kendall Hairston-Lee; her sisters: Barbara Cofield and Brenda Cofield; her nieces and nephews: Eric Small (Cheryl Williams Small), Jeffrey Cofield (Victoria Cofield), Judy Frederick, Cherrelle Williams, Jade Cofield, Jalen Cofield, Justin Cofield, Ahnaya Speller and Arielle Williams; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
