Opal Smith Obituary

Opal Joanna Smith, age 57, peacefully joined the beaches of the heavens on Saturday, April 24, 2021 in New York.  She was born into the world on January 20, 1964 by John Hugo Smith and Carolyn Margaret Howard as one of six children. Opal was educated by way of John Jay College of Criminal Justice where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 1991.

Opal Smith lived an honorable life.  She was a humanitarian for the world, and an activist for her people.  She believed in the fundamental principles of hard, sincere work, dedication, and providing for family, no matter what.  She was devoted to her priorities which included her family and her fifteen-year career as a Community Supervision Officer.

She was also an avid reader.  One of her favorite pastimes before bed was to read books, often about mystery or romance.  However, her favorite book to read was the Holy Bible.  Over her life, she developed a personal and unique connection with Jesus Christ and her spirituality.  There was always a bible kept at home and on her person.  She loved listening to Gospel and Christian Radio. She also loved cruises, traveling, and experiencing the gifts of life with her family.

We will remember Opal J. Smith for her devotion and servitude to God. We will remember her for her commitment to raising not only her children but the community as a collective.  We will remember her for always making sure we did the right thing, even during the hardest times. We will remember her for her ability to overcome any challenge she was ever met with.  One of her favorite quotes is from Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”  Opal persevered no matter what.  We will remember her for being full of light and life, humor, and fun!  If Opal loved you, she fought for you and always had your back.  She is a true star in our world.

Her legacy continues through the lives of her children: Tiffany Chavis, Tyrell Smith, and Tevin Smith; her grandchildren: Saquaya Hilton, Marquis Amari Chavis, and Nasir Hooks; her siblings: John Smith, Lisa Smith, April Smith, Nadine Smith, and Hope Smith, and their children; as well as her intermediate and extended families lovingly.
