Narcissus Brinson Obituary

Narcissus (Newkirk) Brinson was born on November 4, 1933, in Fowlstown, Georgia, to Sam and Eliza Newkirk. The youngest of six children—Sam Jr., Sylvester, Lorenzo, Victoria, and Maggie—she was the final surviving sibling, a cherished link to a remarkable generation. After an extended illness, she peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 8:36 PM at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.

In February 1950, she married Paul Brinson, and together they made their home in Bainbridge, Georgia. As a devoted wife and homemaker, she and Paul were blessed with six children: Paul Jr. (deceased), Pamela, Kenneth (deceased), Felicia, Charles, and Reginald.

In July 1964, determined to create a better life for her family, Narcissus courageously relocated to Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. As a single mother of six, she worked tirelessly to provide for her children. She began her career in New York City as a housekeeper, later becoming a Para-Professional with the NYC Board of Education. Her dedication and leadership led her to the role of School Safety Superintendent, where she served faithfully for 27 years until her retirement in 1998.

Narcissus was a woman of deep faith and unwavering service. She and her family first joined the Williamsburg Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, where she served joyfully in the Ushers Ministry. After moving to Decatur Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant in 1968, she became a devoted member of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church, continuing her passionate work as an usher. Her commitment to the Ushers Ministry was well-known, friends often joked that her wardrobe consisted only of white uniforms, a tease she met with laughter and a playful reveal of her broader closet.

She was a loyal member of the Ushers Association of Brooklyn and Long Island, participating in various ministries including the Charity Club. Additionally, she was a proud and long-standing member of the Order of the Eastern Stars (OES), where she found joy, sisterhood, and purpose in service.

A gifted cook and gracious hostess, Narcissus loved bringing people together. Holidays, family gatherings, and friendly visits were always filled with warmth, delicious food, and her signature hospitality. She was also an active member of the 300 Decatur Street Block Association, contributing to the strength and unity of her community.

Throughout her life, Narcissus encouraged her children—and countless young people she encountered during her years as a School Safety Officer—to pursue education, strive for excellence, and become the best version of themselves. She instilled in her family the values of faith, hard work, perseverance, and mutual care. She was immensely proud of her children and their accomplishments.

Narcissus leaves to cherish her memory her four surviving children: Pamela, Felicia, Charles (Marcia), and Reginald; her grandchildren: Paulette, Ayesha, Brian, Zabecca, Lillian, Regine, C’Andre, Benjamin, and Lauren; her great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of loving neighbors and dear friends.

Her legacy of love, service, strength, and faith will continue to shine through all who were blessed to know her.
