Melodine Thompson Obituary

Melodine Thompson, affectionately known to family and friends as “Cookie”, was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on January 1, 1959 to Willie Dean Thompson and (the late) David Haynes.  She exchanged her earthly vessel for her heavenly wings on Sunday, June 13, 2021.

The fourth of seven siblings, the family relocated to Brooklyn, New York when Cookie was young.  Cookie attended New York City Public Schools and graduated from Sara J. Hale High School.  She continued her education at Medgar Evers College where she studied Liberal Arts.  After college, Cookie worked for Hanover Trust Company as a Titled Operations Assistant.  She was also a Mail Carrier for the United States Postal Service, and served as Chairperson of the New York City Board of Elections.  After more than thirteen years of service, Cookie retired from the New York Police Department as a School Safety Agent. Cookie was a dedicated member of the Eastern Star.

Cookie was a beloved mother, grandmother, community volunteer and friend who loved to entertain.   She was intelligent, strong, and a take charge kind of woman.  She was “one tough cookie”, but also had a heart of gold. You couldn’t get over on her!  She was a giving person, both of her time and talents.  Cookie was willing to share the knowledge she possessed with friends and family to help them in every way possible.  She especially enjoyed interacting with any young person she came in contact with, sharing many valuable lessons with them.  She gave great advice to students that kept them from making poor decisions. She always had a listening ear while serving as a School Safety Agent.

Cookie had a great love for her community.  As an active member of her Block Association, she was instrumental in arranging neighborhood cleanups and activities for the neighborhood youth.  She was also a member of the Prospect Heights Community Garden.  She loved to grow her own vegetables and share them with her Mom and siblings.  She was even overjoyed when she could share her delight of gardening with her daughter Brittany and grandson Linden. Cookie was a magnificent seamstress; she loved to sew.  Sewing and fashion brought her great joy.  Cookie was a devoted Christian. She attended Brooklyn Tabernacle Church in Brooklyn, New York.

She was preceded in death by her father David Haynes; and her sisters: Maybelline Thompson Jones and Eva Mae Thompson. Cookie leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Brittany Thompson; two grandsons: Linden Lyscene and Thane Ivory; her mother Willie Dean Thompson; two sisters: Margaret Kinloch and Cornelia Thomas; two brothers: Richard Thompson and Harry Thompson; two sisters-in-law: Colette Thompson and Lawanda Thompson; stepfather: Harold Thomas; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
