Mary Powell Perera Obituary

Mary Jacqueline Powell Perera was born on July 30, 1947 to (the late) James Earl Powell and Bertha Mae Jones Powell in Fishing Creek, North Carolina. Her family migrated to New York during her adolescent years.

Mary realized that education is one of the keys that unlocks many doors, so she put herself through college, and not only became the Special Assistant to the Dean of Medgar Evers College, but also earned her Master’s degree in Computer Science.

Mary was fun-loving, and was always there for her family and friends.  Some of her favorite pastimes which she enjoyed with her husband were fishing and traveling.  She also loved to cook and have big family dinners during the holidays.

On Saturday, May 2, 2020, Mary departed this life at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.  She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 32 years Freddie Perera; her sons: Bernard Lee Johnson, Jr. and DeShawn Johnson; her sisters: Vergenia Powell Johnson, Margaret Powell, Shirley Powell and Jasmin Jean-Pierre; her brothers: Roosevelt Powell, Thomas Powell and Dennis Powell; a stepdaughter Gwen Perera; two stepsons: Allan Perera and Dino Perera; her grandchildren: Anthony Bernard Johnson, Daion Johnson, Antonious Johnson, Devonte Johnson, Orlanda Johnson, Jasmine Johnson, Paisley Johnson Bryson James Johnson, Quintasha Johnson, DeShawn Johnson, Jr., Zariah Johnson, Sadiqua Corbett, Jamel Oakman, Tamika Oakman, Dominique Perera, Brittany Jones and Eric Jones; three great-grandchildren: Jamel, II (“Bam-Bam”), Zaire (“Moochie”) and Nasir Prince; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dearest Jackie ~

Until we meet again . . . the special memories of you will always bring smiles to our faces.  If only we could have you back for just a little while, then we could sit, talk, eat, and laugh again like we use to.  You mean so very much to all of us and always will.  The fact that you are no longer here will cause us all pain, but you are forever in our hearts and minds.
