Levander Moore Obituary
Levander Moore was born on December 11, 1940, in Bennettsville, South Carolina, to the late Edmond Moore and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Moore. As the youngest of seven children, Levander was truly the baby of the family and was lovingly cared for by his siblings throughout his early years.
After a full life filled with love, laughter, and meaningful relationships, Levander peacefully entered eternal rest on March 6, 2026.
Levander attended Marlboro County Public Schools and graduated from East Side High School in Bennettsville, South Carolina, on May 25, 1958. From an early age, his personality and leadership qualities were evident. He served as Associate Editor of the Yearbook and as a Member-at-Large on the Senior Class Executive Staff Board.
In October 1963, Levander proudly enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably until October 1965 as an Armor Radio Maintenance Technician. He took pride in his service and carried the discipline and strong work ethic he learned into every aspect of his life.
In 1966, Levander met Ruby. What began as a friendship eventually grew into a lasting love—after years of him chasing and Ruby finally giving in. Their journey together led to marriage on April 30, 1977. Through their union, Levander gained a bonus daughter, Sheila, and one year later welcomed Lafragia. He was a devoted husband and a loving father who took pride in his family.
In 1982, Levander began his career with the City of New York at CUNY – New York City College of Technology (City Tech). He dedicated 20 years of service to the institution, starting as a Custodian and later being promoted to Custodian Supervisor. His commitment, reliability, and strong work ethic were evident throughout his career, and he retired in June of 2002.
Levander had a way of making people feel good just by being around him. He was the life of the party, known for his contagious laugh, laid-back spirit, and easygoing nature. He loved simple pleasures—fried chicken and a Pepsi, watching baseball (especially his beloved New York Mets), and enjoying his favorite meal of the day: breakfast. If breakfast was on the table, you could count on all the Southern staples and a hot cup of coffee close by.
In his younger years, Levander often stopped people in their tracks because of his resemblance to Richard Pryor—something that always led to laughter and conversation. He worked hard, laughed often, and lived life in a way that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Levander leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Ruby Moore; his daughters, Shelia Vargas (Alfonso) and Lafragia Moore; his bonus grandsons, Jonathan, Jouburt, and Javier; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmond Moore and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Moore, and his siblings: Henry Moore, Malvina Garner, Alice “Louise” Covington, Alexander Moore, George Moore, and Ethel Lee Dargan.
Levander will be remembered as a loving father, a devoted husband, a loyal friend, and a man whose joy and warmth touched many lives. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit, stories, and laughter will live on forever in our hearts.
