Kevin R. Craig Obituary

On Thursday, December 5, 2024, Kevin Robert Craig departed from this life into eternity.

He was born September 9, 1954 to (the late) Cecil Robert Craig and Mercedes (Chambers) Craig in Brooklyn, New York, where he lived for the entirety of his life.  He was predeceased by his sister, Sheryl V. (Craig) Blowe (2012).

“Kev”, as he was affectionately called, graduated from St. Gregory the Great Parochial School in 1968 and received his high school diploma from St. John’s Preparatory High School in 1972.  He furthered his education at Pace University in New York City where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1981.

While at Pace, Kevin met and then married Patricia Gardner in September 1980. Through this union, their son Desmond was born in 1985.

While spending his initial years in law enforcement, Kevin’s passion was in social work where he spent the majority of his professional career.  He held various administrative and support positions for family service agencies at St. Christopher Ottilie, Brookwood Child Care Services and Block Institute.  In 1980, Kevin began work as a Direct Support Professional for the developmentally disabled at Mercy Home for Children in Brooklyn where he also served as a Union Delegate. After 44 years of dedicated service, he recently retired, on October 30th, as the facility's longest-tenured worker.

Kevin was an avid New York sports fan. He showed no favoritism, and rooted for all six of the local major sports teams through good and bad times equally, with the New York Knicks being his favorite.  Kev could still remember listening on the radio to the Knicks win game 5 of the 1970 NBA Championship against the Los Angeles Lakers in pouring rain, while waiting to meet his mother after work.

A great dad, Kevin passed his love of sports down to his son Desmond, and served as the head coach on Desmond’s first baseball team, and the assistant coach on his first basketball team.

Later in his life, Kevin renewed his relationship with the Lord, and joined The Brooklyn Tabernacle Church where he was a member of the Men's Ministry. He was a hard worker who dedicated his life to service.  Kevin would always go out of his way to help family, friends and colleagues, but never wanted the accolades or credit associated with it.

He leaves to forever cherish his memory, his son Desmond; his beloved grandsons: Zaire, Ameer, and Orion; his brother Vincent Craig (Latisha); his sisters: Karen Craig (Charles Bennett) and Theresa Craig; aunts: Virginia Carter and O'leatha Ann Amazigo; nieces: Tiffany (Haji), Crystal, Michelle, DeAna, Andrea, and Alexis; nephews: Tommy and Robert; his former spouse Patricia Craig; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
