On June 8,1927, in Georgetown, Guyana, South America, Cyril Glen and Clara Alleyne welcomed their first child, Joyce Muriel Alleyne. Joyce, often called Muriel, was a soft spoken, gentle spirited child of GOD. Her timid, quiet demeanor could never overshadow her desire to show love, kindness, and forgiveness. She knew early on that her purpose in life was to serve Christ wholeheartedly in her gifting of hospitality.
In 1965, Muriel migrated to Canada, obtained citizenship, and resided until 1974. The Canadian winters were not welcoming but she was determined to fulfill her purpose. She worked as a home cleaning attendant and saved her money so that she could send clothing and other essentials to her mother and younger sister, Olga. In 1974, Muriel left Montreal and settled in the East Flatbush community of Brooklyn, New York. She began her U.S. employment in the retail industry as a sales associate. Subsequently, she changed her career to home healthcare and became a home health aide for Bushwick Stuyvesant Heights Home Attendants Agency until retirement.
Muriel enjoyed attending weekly church services, bible studies, prayer group meetings, senior citizen outings, and serving at community outreach activities. Her warm smile and bubbly laughter brightened our family celebration, picnics, and travel excursions. Moreover, her favorite pastime was spending quiet time with the lover of her soul, Jesus Christ. She often stated, “LORD, help me to be what I ought to be so I can stand before you.”
On June 8, 2024, Muriel celebrated her 97th birthday and soon after, on August 10, 2024, she quietly transitioned to her eternal rest in the comfort of her home of 48 years.
Joyce Muriel is preceded in death by her father Cyril Glen, mother Clara Alleyne, and sister Olga Pilgrim. She is survived by her brother James (Wally) Alcindor, sister-in-law, Shirley Yaw, “ready-made” daughter Annie Callender, and many nephews and nieces. She no longer suffers from sickness and pain. Our precious Muriel will be missed but not forgotten. However, we confidently know she’s asleep in Christ, with Heaven’s glorious choir joyously singing, “Holding on to God’s Unchanging Hand!”
