For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteousness judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto ALL them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8
Early in the morning on November 20, 2023 when the world was at peace, God sent his angels to Downstate Medical Center to escort John Henry Satchell home to rest from his labor here on earth, where there is no more pain, no more medication nor suffering.
John Henry Satchel born on September 4, 1945, was the son of the late Willie Robert and Majorie Louise Satterthwaite Satchell in Bath, North Carolina. John he was number 14 out of 18 children born. He received his education with the Beaufort County School System. After high school John Henry left and migrated to Brooklyn NY. In Brooklyn is where he met the love of his life Mary Green; they then united in Holy Matrimony on November 17, 1984 and they became a blended family. John worked for IMC Delivery Service within the Garment District of Manhattan NY for 43 years.
John Henry, as he was affectionately known loved to be with his family and made it a yearly vacation to go back to Bath NC to spend time with his many siblings and friends. When John was back in Brooklyn he loved to sit with his friends within the park and neighborhood and play spades. He also loved to hang out at the NYC Federation of Black Cowboys. When it got close to 8pm John would be in the house calling his sister back in North Carolina so that they could watch wrestling together and talk about what was happening. John main hobby was getting scratch offs and seeing if he won, he didn’t care if he lost, it was the excitement of just scratching them off that he loved.
John leaves to cherish his memories his wife Mary G. Satchel of the home. One Son John McIntosh (Fahreetah) of East Orange New Jersey, Four Daughters Taya Dunn of Brooklyn NY, Sabrina Satchel of Georgia, Sophia Gregg (Robert) of South Carolina and Stephanie Satchel of South Carolina. 18 grandkids and 21 great grandkids. One sister Louette Slade of Bath, NC. Two special nieces Michelle Satchel of Bath NC and Tamika Satchel Johnson of Angier NC. John also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. John was preceded in death by his daughter Venus Ables and 16 siblings one in which was his twin sister.
A special thank you to Deborah Ables, Michael Ables, Nicole Ables, and Taya Dunn for staying at the hospital making sure that John ate and was cared for and giving Mary a break during this difficult time of having to watch the love of her life slowly being escorted by angels to his heavenly home.
