Iris Eunice Sloan Obituary

Iris Eunice Holford Sloan, age ninety-six, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13, 2026 in Brooklyn, New York.  Born on August 20, 1929 in Christ Church, Barbados, Iris lived a remarkable life defined by compassion, faith, and service to others.

Iris dedicated her professional career to Harlem Hospital in New York City where she served as Chief Dietician.  In this role, she ensured compliance with nutritional standards, planned patient menus, and collaborated with medical staff to optimize patient care and wellness.  Her dedication to her work was evident throughout her twenty-five years of service, until her retirement in January 1986.

A devout Christian and an active member of St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church, Iris found immense joy and purpose in serving her community.  As a Eucharistic Minister, she devoted herself to helping the elderly and disabled through the homebound and sick ministries. She brought communion to parishioners in nursing homes, hospitals, and private residences — a testament to her unwavering commitment to those in need.  Her contributions were recognized when St. Teresa honored her with the title "Mother of the Year", a distinction that reflected the deep respect and admiration she earned from her church family.

In her latter years, Iris embraced a love for travel and adventure.  She delighted in exploring the world through cruises, but cherished most, her visit to The Vatican in Rome.  This journey held special significance for Iris as it deepened her spiritual connection and reaffirmed her faith.

Iris's compassion extended far beyond her immediate circle.  Known for her selflessness, she often stood on pantry lines — not for herself, but for others who were unable to do so, assuring that those in need had access to food.  Her kind heart and fighting spirit were hallmarks of her character.

Iris is survived by her son Ernest Sloan; her grandchildren: Chelsea Sloan, Jordan Sloan, and Joan Deana Mohamaed Sloan; a great-niece JoyAnn Hurdle; and dear friend Patricia Harris. Leon B. Applewaite was instrumental in Iris’s success, and was most notably, a father-figure to Ernest.

She was predeceased by her sisters: Myra, Odessa and Pearl; her brothers: Norman, Handing and Eugene; her beloved husband Ernest Jackson Sloan; and her grandson David McIntyre.

Though dementia ultimately claimed Iris's life, it could never diminish the legacy of love and service she leaves behind.

May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
