Gloria Fraser Obituary

On a hot summer’s day July 1, 1933, in the district of Mason Rum Manchester, Jamaica, a baby girl was born. She was Gloria Eunice Reid, the daughter of Louise Adamson, a seamstress and Frederick Reid, a businessman from neighbouring district of Christiana.

Her advent would’ve brought immediate changes to the James Adamson led family structure. She would become the first grandchild and thereafter, stood ahead of scores of other grandchildren who were to follow suite.

Her father migrated to USA to continue along with his entrepreneurial pathway, operating a laundromat in Bronx. Considering his absence and the youthfulness of her mother, she was placed into the capable hands of her grandparents who cared for her throughout her childhood.

She attended the Pike Presbyterian Church where she participated in the various church activities and the Pike Elementary School between the years 1941-1947. During which period she excelled in the academics. After graduation, she was employed at the same school as a pre-trained teacher, whilst pursuing further studies in the three stages of the then Jamaica Local Examinations. By 1949 she was successful in all the three stages.

She then moved to Kingston and entered the Buxton High School where she majored in Book Keeping; an introduction to accounts. This became her career pathway. She was employed by the Bardowell Group of Stores as their Accounting Clerk, which was the position she held until she migrated.

During her adolescent years she met Horace Boncroft Fraser, who later became one of the top police officer in the Jamaica Constabulary Force. Their relationship was to culminate into Holy Matrimony in 1954. The union produced two children; Louis and Coral. They cherished their young ones tremendously.

In pursuit of a better quality of life for her family, Gloria decided to migrate to the USA in 1962. However, the entire family was to become reunited in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1968. Things were however different from Jamaica because she now found herself having to do multiple jobs to survive.

But, Gloria propelled her way well and curved out a career path in cosmetology, which brought her significant success for years. However, during her period of success, divorce soared its ugly head and her marriage was dissolved in 1970.

Her third child, Elizabeth, who predeceased her was born in 1971. Gloria had dreams of her children going to college and was very insistent on them having a college education. They all did.

During the mid-eighties the cosmetology industry took a downturn and she was forced to close the doors of her 16 year old business. She went to work at Kingsboro Psychiatric Centre as a Mental Hygiene Therapist. She worked at this facility for more than 20 years until her retirement.

She had plans to retire in Georgia and headed there. However, after a few years, because of ill-health she returned to Brooklyn, N.Y. and she remained there under the watchful care of her family… until that Cold Winter’s Night of January 4th 2022.

She left to mourn Children- Coral & Louis (Cynthia), Grandchildren- Stephen, Cody, William, Megan, Morgan and Ama. Sister- Mavis, Brothers- Winston and Errol. Cousins, Nieces, Nephews, other relatives and friend.

MAY HER SOUL FINDS ETERNAL PEACE.
