Flora Jane Dodson Obituary

Flora Jane Dodson was born on Wednesday, September 13, 1944 in Bennettsville, South Carolina to (the late) Esther Covington and Willoughby Bridges.  Flora was raised in Bennettsville until the 5th grade, and while there, she attended Blenum Public School, and it is also where the family worshipped the Lord at Macedonia Baptist Church.  Flora’s family decided to relocate to Brooklyn, New York, and she completed her educational journey as follows: P.S. 25 (elementary); P.S. 57 (junior high), and then Eastern District High School from which she graduated in 1964.

After attending high school, Flora met and married the love of her life, her late husband Albert Dodson, Jr., and together they raised their three children: Gwendolyn E. Dodson, Toshia E. Smith, and Albert Q. Dodson, III.  Flora was a wonderful, involved, and dedicated mother to her three children, and always planned the best family activities to include family picnics, beach outings or even family getaways.  She was keen on making solid decisions, and once she felt her children had a good head start with attending school, she decided to embark upon her own personal career endeavors in the business world.

Flora attended a program at the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), and following the successful completion of that program, began her employment with Consolidated Edison (Con Ed) where her career would span a period of forty years. During Flora’s tenure, she worked inside various departments within the Con Ed conglomerate, and it is most noted that during her time with the company, she embraced several of her co-workers because she enjoyed serving as a mentor and giving advice to those who were seeking to learn how to navigate through life.

Flora always tried to find ways to bring people together.  She loved to dance, dine at fancy restaurants, and travel, and one would add that it was in her travels where she met a host of different people and managed to maintain those relationships as well.  Flora would be best described as beautiful, caring, protective, compassionate, fearless, honest, intelligent, outgoing, selfless, and most importantly outspoken.  She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, but most importantly Flora was a loyal and true friend who always did things her way.

Flora was a devout Christian, who nurtured and matured her relationship with God as an active member of First Baptist Church of Crown Heights since 1959 under the leadership of the late Reverend Clarence Norman, and now under the leadership of Reverend Rashad Raymond Moore.  Flora served on the Joint Board of Ushers and the Floral Club, and she was vigorous in serving her community.  Flora ensured that her children would become versed in knowing and loving the Lord, as she raised them in the church because she knew of God’s goodness, grace, and mercy, and she kept her bible close as she relied on God’s unchanging hand to manage life’s challenges.  Flora loved the Lord.

On Thursday, February 18th, 2021, Flora entered into eternal peace.  She leaves to cherish and celebrate her wonderful life, her daughters: Gwendolyn E. Dodson and Toshia E. Smith (Thomas R. Smith); her son Albert Q. Dodson, III; her beloved grandchildren: grandsons: Brandon I. Santiago and Albert D. Dodson, IV; granddaughters: Niagh G. Dodson, Tyler A. Smith, Phalan A. Smith, Kiarra J. Dodson and Savannah Dodson; her great-grandchildren: A’Marie Kharter Dodson and Ashton Dodson; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church members and friends.
