Ernest DuBose, Jr. was born to (the late) Ernest DuBose, Sr. and Edith DuBose-Gales on August 9, 1934 in Darlington County, South Carolina. Ernest transitioned into peace on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at Woodhull Hospital after a brief illness.
“Juice”, as he was affectionately known by family and friends, was educated in the Darlington County public school system. As a young child, Juice, the youngest of three siblings, attended Sandy Grove Methodist Church with his family.
Ernest had a special relationship with his mother. She was a very productive woman who taught Ernest diverse skills such as sewing, fixing things around the home, and cooking. Two of his specialties were his famous banana pudding and hog-head cheese. Juice became a man of many talents from the different skills he learned. He could fix and repair anything; he was our “Handy Fix-It Man.”
In 1953, Juice migrated to New York City, and in early 1956, he met Aline Hickman at a party. Later that year, the two married on November 10th. From their union, five children were born.
Ernest was a very hard-working, dependable, loving family man who was a good provider for his family. He worked as a trucker and forklift operator for over forty-five years for Owens-Illinois and later at Delta Container Corporation in Elizabeth, New Jersey from which he retired in the year 2000.
Juice was a dapper dresser and had a love of cars -- especially Cadillacs. He knew his way around an engine. If anyone had a problem with their car, Ernest was their man to fix it. His hobbies were listening to old R&B artists, watching old westerns such as Gunsmoke and The Rifleman, and variety shows on TV, and fishing.
Juice was preceded in death by his two siblings: Annie Lee Green and Joseph, two children: James and Ernest, III, and one grandson Akeim. He leaves to cherish his memories, his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Aline; his sons: Lonnie (Adorn) and Andre; his daughters: Sandra Marie (of Brooklyn, New York) and Daisy B. Hickman (of Bishopville, South Carolina); one brother Henry Gales; seven grandchildren: Stephanie, Lionel, Cheenekie, Chris, Laiquan, Lonnie K, and Tyvon (Grandpa’s special helper); eight great-grandchildren, one great-great- grandchild, two adoptive grandchildren: Jessecharles and April Page; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Davis (Herbert) and Jeanette Hickman; one brother-in-law Otis Hickman (Mamie); three very special great-grandchildren: Tikia Carter, Aniyah Dixon and Jayla Martin; two close friends: Henry Lee Samuel and Jesse Monroe; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
