Earline Davis Obituary

Earline Davis was born November 16, 1947 in Mobile, Alabama, and raised in Fairhope, Alabama by her proud parents, Amos Davis and Ella Mae English.  Earline attended Baldwin County Training High School in Fairhope.

Being the eldest of six children, Earline learned how to take care of children, her younger siblings in particular, and how to cook.  She would eventually grow to love cooking.  She was always the go-to person when you needed to know how to cook any particular dish.  People would travel from near and far to experience her Lemon Pound Cake.

At the age of twenty, Earline moved to Brooklyn, New York to live with her Uncle Jack and his wife, Naomi.  This is where she would begin her new life.  In 1976, Earline met Peggy Smith, (now Peggy Iman Washington).  The two of them would grow to love each other dearly and to become life-long friends.  One Sunday, Peggy invited Earline to attend a church service with her.  She agreed to go, and on that very Sunday, when the doors of the church were opened, Earline accepted the invitation, gave her life to the Lord, and became a member of the House of the Lord Church where the Reverend Dr. Herbert Daughtry was the Pastor.  It was here where her life would change forever.

For over forty years, Earline, who would become affectionately known as “Mama Earline”, planted herself and her children at this great church, embodying its mission and its ministry -- whether it was commanding the kitchen on Sundays, cooking and serving delicious dinners, coordinating the Junior Usher Board, being a member of the Gospel Chorus, being a tribe leader, coordinating the Wednesday Prayer Services or serving as Coordinator of the House of the Lord Building Fund.  She was also an active member of its Sisterhood Department.  In 1980, Earline  became an active member of the Black United Front, participating in countless marches and demonstrations, declaring that she was “fired up and wouldn’t take no more”, going to jail under the banner of “peaceful protests” and, thanks be to God, living long enough to see a semblance of the change promised to come.

Earline had a big heart for the young and the old.  She voluntarily cared for the churches’ elderly.  She assisted in taking care of our beloved Deacon Betty Brazell until Betty received her wings.  Remember Mother Cecil Hayes?  Earline cared for Mother Hayes in her later years until she passed away.  She served this population without complaining or having a requirement of a monetary gift.  She worked for a number of years as a professional, private Nanny. She also worked as a home attendant.  Her great love and skills for cooking (as mentioned earlier) would soon lead to her being hired as the Senior Dietician of the Alonzo Daughtry Memorial Day Care Center.  She would serve in this capacity from July 2001 until she retired, nineteen years later, in September 2020.
