Dorothy Hills was born on July 8, 1932 to (the late) Florence Joseph and Oswald Hills in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. At a young age, she left St. Thomas and moved to Brooklyn, New York in search of better opportunities and a better life for herself and her family.
She began her career in Facility Maintenance Management at Elmhurst General Hospital and worked nights at Rockefeller Center in a similar role. Dorothy later joined the facility maintenance management team at Kings County Hospital where she enrolled in their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program. After completing her training, she worked as an EMT at Kings County Hospital where she was recognized for her dedication and hard work until her retirement.
On Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at the age of ninety-two, Dorothy Hills departed this life at her residence in Brooklyn, New York. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Allan Callwood and Edwin Joseph, and her sisters, Alhenia Joseph Crichlow (“Tiny”), Cynthia Hills(“Spuds”), and Priscilla Callwood.
She is survived by two sisters: Lydia Joseph of Brooklyn, New York, and Ilva Turnbull of Huntersville, North Carollina; two brothers: Rehalio Joseph of Queens, New York and Malcolm Joseph of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; one son Kenneth Conway of Brooklyn; three daughters: Carmen Miller of Queens, Brenda Jacobs of Brooklyn, and Gwenneth Conway of Hagerstown, Maryland; one son-in-law Selwyn Jacobs; one daughter-in-law Virginia J. Conway; ten grandchildren: Rekiya, And-gela, Selwyn, II, Sherida, Kristopher, Kason, Jessica, Habeebah, Kennan, and Ben; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Dorothy Hills was known for her caring and generous nature. She was always available to support those in need who came to her for love and comfort. As the matriarch of her family, she will be deeply missed by all those she loved and nurtured throughout her remarkable life.
