Doreen A. McIndoe

Sis. Doreen was born on February 7, 1949 to (the late) Randolph C. Barrett and Violet Dimmit in St. Catherine, Jamaica, West Indies where she grew up in Spanish Town with her grandmother and father, attending Crescent All Age School. After graduation, Doreen migrated to the United States of America in 1969 to join her mother.  She started working immediately -- a true go-getter.

In 1970 while working as a nurses’ aide at Congress Nursing Home (now known as Cobble Hill Nursing Home), she met her loving husband Clenford S. McIndoe. They married soon thereafter in March 1971.  Two years later in 1973, Doreen and her husband made a decision to start their own coffee truck business. After starting that business, they decided to start investing in real estate in 1975.

Sis. Doreen and her family never left out the church.  In 1978, she joined First Baptist Church of Crown Heights where Rev. Clarence Norman, Sr. was the Pastor at the time. She was an active member of the Sanctuary Choir and the Concert Choir ministries for many years.  Many did not know that she had a lovely soprano voice.  She was very soft spoken while still demanding respect.

Always thinking of the future, Sis. Doreen decided to attend Dudley Cosmetology School, for it was her desire to make people happy and feel beautiful, both inside and out. As an entrepreneur, she ventured out in 1980, independently opening her own hair care salon, “Touch of Elegance”, where she was a monument in her community, providing job opportunities to family and friends, overextending herself to help and please others.  Never forgetting family back home in Jamaica, Sis. Doreen and her husband sponsored numerous family and friends in coming to the States -- the true definition of a Strong Black Power Couple.

Sis. Doreen and her husband became pillars in the community by opening 3D’s Restaurant and Bakery -- the first of many.  The backbone of the family, she not only ran her salon, she managed the trucking business and the restaurants, not once missing a beat.  She was sharp and consistent; strong-minded yet she could be sassy at times when it came to her children.  Invested in family, she never hesitated to help manage her son Patrick’s restaurant when asked, and did so for twelve years until she retired.  Nevertheless, even in retirement, she still could not let go of “the boss lady” role; she continued alongside her husband, shopping and driving him around town when he could no longer drive himself.  They were one unit; when you saw one, you saw the other -- inseparable.

In March 2019, she fell ill with pancreatic cancer, and on Sunday, June 9, 2019, Sis. Doreen McIndoe heard the call of the Father at 4:15 a.m. at home in the arms of her husband, Clenford McIndoe, and took flight for her new home.  A phenomenal human being, she loved everyone and was loved by so many. Affectionately known as “Mommy”, “Auntie Ma” and “Auntie Doreen”, she adopted so many people into her family and into her heart.

The eldest of eleven siblings, Doreen was preceded in death by her father Randolph Barrett, her mother Violet Gordon, her brother Garth Gordon, her sister Verona Gordon, and her grandson Noel Douglas, Jr.  She leaves behind to cherish her loving memories, her beloved husband Clenford McIndoe; her children: Noel, Sandra, Patrick, Karyn, Glenda and Desrena; nineteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church members and friends.

Our lives have been richly blessed by Mommy.  She would always say, “Just pray about it”.  She left a legacy of love. We gave her flowers, hugs, smiles, phone calls and kind words.  Continue the love.
