Dexter Reynard Lott of Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 55 on July 1, 2023. Dexter was beloved by many and will be greatly missed by family and friends whom he loved dearly. A king amongst men, Dexter was known for his loving spirit, captivating smile and infectious personality. He was the light around which many happily orbited.
He was an incredible athlete, a gifted and passionate actor, writer, and singer. He was driven with a purpose to tell the stories of the community, racial justice, and his life experiences in a way that had never been done before, inspiring his vision in co-creating Poplar Tree Films with his cherished writing partners.
He had several interests some of them including music & film, sports, and politics. He was a BIG fan of the NY Yankees, Brooklyn Nets, and Michigan Wolverines, but an even bigger fan of his nephews!
Dexter was born October 28, 1967, to parents Virginia Lott Swain and Donald Reynard Lott in Jacksonville, FL. He grew up in Alexandria, VA, where he attended Hayfield Secondary School and was ranked the best running back in all of Virginia and the entire Metropolitan area (DMV). He then went on to continue to play football at the next level for Chowan College in NC and later Temple University in Philadelphia. He finally completed his education at The National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in Washington, DC.
Dexter leaves behind his loving life partner, Susan Eerdmans who he cherished with all of his heart, brothers Delvin (Ashley) and Dorian (Franchele), step brother Donald Reynard Jr. (Tiffany) and nephews Daylin, Dakota, Darcy, Daxon, his aunt Jean Lloyd, and cousins Shannon Hodge (Charles), Connie Prime, Paula Johnson (Derrick). He will also be sadly missed by Susan's family: Anita Eerdmans, Karl and Rachael Eerdmans and their kids Augustus and Leonidas, and many other relatives.
Dexter was a free spirit who loved to travel, as a result there were many places during his life he called home: Virginia, England, Philadelphia, Denver Washington, DC, and finally Brooklyn, NY. His much-loved neighborhood of Bushwick, where he lived for 14 years, he was deeply devoted to those around him as he touched hearts, altered lives, and made people feel truly seen and loved.
Dexter had the gift of making anyone he met feel they were the most important person in the room. His unconditional love, friendship, mentorship, and passion for life will forever be a light living in our hearts.
To honor his memory and in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a local mutual aid organization that was important to him such as Bushwick Ayuda Mutua or Washington Square Park Mutual Aid, or to the Justice Committee which fights for racial justice in New York City.
