Constantia Violet Whetstone, beloved mother of three – Yvonne Wyllie, Garfield Taylor and Farrell Taylor – has made the final journey home to be with our lord and savior. Ms. Whetstone was born 23 October 1926 in Jamaica, West Indies, and passed on 16 Feb 2020 at the age of 93. She immigrated to the United States in 1963, became a citizen and has lived in Brooklyn, New York for over 50 years.
To her family and close friends, she was called “Sista”, a name that brings to mind the love and respect she engendered in our family. Although, “Sista” was one of fourteen children, and had limited “formal” education, she had unshakable spirit and divine wisdom that guided her through life. During her early years in Jamaica, Ms. Whetstone owned her own business. After immigrating to the United States, Ms. Whetstone worked multiple jobs to earn a living with the goal of bringing her three children to the United States. Ms. Whetstone, a single, African American woman, mother of three, was able to save and ultimately purchase a home in Brooklyn. All this while instilling a sense of morality and work ethic that would serve her children throughout their lives. A significant point of pride was all three of her children attending and graduating from college and having flourishing families of their own – with seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Our beloved mother and grandmother’s courage, tenacity, humor and love will be dearly missed. We were blessed to have her as an inspiration, our north star to help guide our lives.
Ms. Whetstone leaves to mourn and cherish her memory, her three children, two sisters and two brothers.
