Beryl Patterson Obituary

First time on a plane / here you came / You found a door / and held it open / No way to know how to make a home / In someone else's motherland / You transplanted a family tree / And a part of it grew into me”  -Olivia Dean, ‘Carmen’

Grew into us. Beryl's Clan.

Beryl Rose Patterson was born in Rae Town, Kingston, Jamaica on May 3, 1922. She lived to see the century change and was the only one of her four siblings to live beyond the hundred year mark. In her early forties, she embarked on a journey that would change the course of her lineage; she came to and made a home in America. She was a risk-taker and enjoyed spending her free time doing just that by playing the slots. She loved the NY Mets, Atlantic City, and the home she made at 254 Remsen Avenue in Brooklyn. She built a life for her and her children in the states, by herself, in her own way. And even though she lived here, she never forgot her roots and from where she came, keeping Jamaica present in her home, in her speech, in her cooking, and in her heart. She loved to travel by any means and took the B46 from her house to Kings Plaza well into her late eighties. She was feisty, strong-minded, ambitious, and a hard worker. Because of her, there is a we.

Beryl lived through events that we have only been privy to through reading about in history textbooks, newspapers, and magazines. Her life was full and she lived it to the fullest.

Beryl is pre-deceased by her mother and father, Frances Clarke & Horatio Patterson, her sisters Florence, DelMarie, and Ivy, her brother Boise, her sons Clifford and Jermyn, her grandsons Michael, Junior, Teroine, and her great-grand sons Kareem and Seth. She is survived by her children and children-in-law, Lawford & Lydia, Lizbeth & Michael, Lydia, Catherine, and Sharon. Her seventeen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

On behalf of the generations that begat from Beryl Rose Patterson, we want to thank you for coming and know that we appreciate all the warm wishes from those of you here in the physical, and from those of you here in spirit.

In the words of our matriarch, “God bless and keep you.”
