Barbara Gayle Hill was born in Austin, Texas on March 19, 1944, to (the late) Theodore Hickman and Edna Green Hickman. In 1946, Barbara and her family moved from Texas to New York City, residing in Harlem. Barbara attended Washington Irving High School in Manhattan where she studied nursing.
In 1967, Barbara met her future husband, Edward L. Hill. They resided in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where they raised their son Lamont. Barbara cherished her family and friends, and was always there for those in need.

Barbara lived a full and wonderful life. She enjoyed traveling, music, reading, and the theater, and she loved to talk. A conversation with her was guaranteed to last at least two hours.
