Barbara Hill Obituary

Barbara Gayle Hill was born in Austin, Texas on March 19, 1944, to (the late) Theodore Hickman and Edna Green Hickman.  In 1946, Barbara and her family moved from Texas to New York City, residing in Harlem.  Barbara attended Washington Irving High School in Manhattan where she studied nursing.

In 1967, Barbara met her future husband, Edward L. Hill.  They resided in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where they raised their son Lamont.  Barbara cherished her family and friends, and was always there for those in need.

After spending a couple of years enjoying her retirement from the New York City Department of Social Services, Barbara became a Community Assistant for the Manhattan Borough President, Ruth Messinger.  While working for Mrs. Messinger, Barbara obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from The College of New Rochelle.  She was always encouraging anyone who would listen concerning the importance of getting an education.

Barbara lived a full and wonderful life.  She enjoyed traveling, music, reading, and the theater, and she loved to talk.  A conversation with her was guaranteed to last at least two hours.

On Saturday, April 20, 2019, Barbara Gayle Hill departed this life. Though predeceased by her brother James Hickman, she leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Edward L. Hill; her children: Lamont Sherman Wells and Deborah Russell; her grandchildren: Lenice Yolanda Wells and Lelanie Wells; two brothers: Wilbert Hickman, and his wife Barbara Hickman (of North Carolina), and Darryl Hickman (of Brooklyn New York); two sisters: Beverly Jackson (of Queens, New York) and Ida Stallings (of Atlanta, Georgia); nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
