Michael M. SmithSeptember 15, 1950 ~ January 3, 2018 (age 67)
Michael McCormick Smith was born on September 15th, 1950 in Wilmington, North Carolina to (the late) Lawrence McCormick Smith and Louvenia Pigford-Smith. He was educated in Wilmington, and later attended Lehman College in New York where he received his Bachelor’s degree.
Before attending college, he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1970. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and received an honorable discharge in 1972. After his discharge from the military, he began his career in corporate America. For over thirty years, Michael worked as an IT Specialist/Analyst for corporations such as Manufacturers Hanover Trust, Blue Cross & Blue Shield, and the Federal Government. As a retiree, he volunteered as a mentor in the New York City public school system. This is where he found his true calling as he enjoyed working with the staff, and most importantly -- the children.
In 1969, Michael met Irma Bobb, and they married in 1972. They remained married for forty-five years, and were together for forty-eight years. Their union was blessed with two sons: Julian and Michael. Michael was a devoted husband and father who understood the importance of family. He was the type of individual who paid very close attention to detail. He was an active listener who thought before speaking. Michael instilled these values and ideals into his sons. He loved his family, and was very neighborly and community oriented.
On Wednesday, January 3, 2018, Michael McCormick Smith departed this life.
