Irene Lodge-Stewart was born December 1, 1950 to (the late) William Earl Griffin and Mary Lee Williams Griffin. She was the ninth of twelve children. Irene graduated from P. S. Jones High School in Washington, North Carolina. She entered various talent shows and played the French horn in the marching band.
After arriving in New York, Irene earned an Associate’s degree in Business Finance. She was employed for many years at Chemical Bank, New York Telephone Company, and later retired from the GHI Health Insurance Company.
Irene loved people. She was a philanthropist, business owner of IRENE’S DREAM, a community organizer, and was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Irene was a very hard-working woman whose aim was to inspire, encourage and promote strong leadership as well as entrepreneurship. Her passions were collecting and selling vintage clothing, antique furniture, jewelry, shoes, handbags, etc. Even during her health challenges, she always managed to smile, encourage and inspire others.
On Thursday, February 8, 2018, Irene departed this life. She was predeceased by her husband Seaton A. Stewart, four brothers: James Griffin, Reverend Frank Griffin, K.D. Griffin “Libby” and Edward Griffin; and one sister Amanda Griffin-Simon. Irene leaves to mourn and cherish her memory, four sons: Steve (and his wife Mary), Glendon (and his wife Dishayna), Shawn and Steve #2; four sisters: Ann Antoine, Cora Weston, Avon Griffin (and her husband Bernie) and Reva Goodwin: two brothers: Willie and Ricky; six granddaughters: Tenae, Soliel, Azalea, Sierra, Autumn and Ryan; one grandson Legend; one aunt Frances Fields; one godson Darius; her mother-in-law Eaflet Stewart: four sisters-in-law: Paulette, Christine, Queenie and Angela; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces, grandnephews, in-laws, other relatives, neighbors and friends.
